The right hand forms a fist, and the left hand is placed vertically (and open) against the right fist. The bow is a salute and also a sign of peace. It is used as a sign of respect when greeting our instructor. It is also used at the opening and closing of a class, before practicing a form, and before sparring with an opponent. In the salute itself, the right hand represents the power . The left symbolizes the warmth and security of peace. Combined, they show respect for the individual. You are telling your opponent that you come in peace, unarmed and without hostilities. *Although the text answer indicates the bow is Chinese, the hand position of the bow has been shared back and forth between Chinese and Japanese styles and the history has become blended.
